Future proofed, optimised and conservation-led regeneration

Talbot Mill comprises the refurbishment and extension of two red-brick mill buildings, dating from the mid-19th Century alongside an additional new build block, accommodating 190 dwellings across all three buildings.

Located within a conservation area and close to a number of listed structures, the buildings are set around an external courtyard that includes a repurposed Timekeeper’s Lodge and podium building accommodating residential amenity space as part of a wider offer within the proposals.

Matt Brook Architects were approached by award-winning developer Capital & Centric to refresh the proposals at Talbot Mill. Our work has focused on maximising the retention of the historic fabric and optimising the proposals to support the economic viability of the project through to construction.

A key intervention has been the retention of the existing lift core and stairs, preserving the historic configuration of the mill complex, retaining embodied carbon and providing both mills with access to a second stair. Across both the existing mill buildings and the new build element, the proposals were optimised to improve efficiency, increase amenity space and introduce second stairs, future-proofing the project. The project is currently on site and expected to complete during 2026.
